Sperm in uterus. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a single human sperm on the inner surface of the uterus, the endometrium. The head of the sperm appears buried in the grass-like ciliated epithelium. Tiny projections or microvilli cover the remaining secretory cells (blue),which provide a moist environment & nutrition to both ova and sperm. Sperm remain incapable of fertilising an ovum until after undergoing capacitation,a process which occurs within the female tract. A close association of sperm with the ciliated cells may relate to this process. Magnification: x3200 at 6x7cm size | |
