Corpus luteum. Light micrograph of a developing corpus luteum in a healthy ovary after ovulation. The corpus luteum develops in the region of the ovary where the mature egg was released into a fallopian tube. It occupies a large area in the centre of the image, with its walls appearing highly folded around a central space; the rest of the ovary is at lower left. Glandular luteal cells of the corpus luteum are derived from cells of the follicle which surrounded the egg. These luteal cells develop under the influence of luteinizing hormone, and they in turn secrete progesterone. This progesterone hormone is important during early pregnancy.
