Kidney glomerulus. Light micrograph of a section through kidney cortex showing a glomerulus. Glomeruli form part of the kidney's functional units, the nephrons,of which there are about one million in a kidney. The glomerulus (centre) is a tightly coiled network of capillaries. As blood passes through it,water and metabolic wastes are filtered through the capillary walls. The water and waste (filtrate) then pass into the lumen of the Bowman's capsule (white) surrounding the glomerulus. From the capsule, the filtrate drains into the tubules (rounded,in surrounding tissue). Reabsorption of most of the filtrate occurs in the tubules. Magnification unknown | |
