Glomerulus. Illustration of the structure of a microscopic blood-filtering unit in the human kid- ney. At centre is the glomerulus - a tight knot of blood capillaries inside a Bowman's capsule. The capillaries are covered with cells called podo- cytes, whose swollen nuclei can be seen here. These help to remove harmful substances from the blood. During filtration, fluid passes out of the glomerulus into the cavity of the Bowman's capsule and drains into the renal tubule (top and bottom). Essential substances and some of the water are re- absorbed from loops of the renal tubule, and the remainder drains to the bladder as urine | |
