Pancreatic cells. Light micrograph of enzyme- secreting cells of the pancreas. Clusters (known as acini) of these glandular cells make up more than 90 percent of the pancreas. They produce digestive enzymes, such as lipases that break down lipids (fats),and proteases (such as trypsin and chymotrypsin) that break down proteins. Granules (dark purple dots) in the acinar cells contain zymogen,an inactive enzyme precursor. The enzymes are assembled by protein synthesis on rough endoplasmic reticulum in the cells' cytoplasm (purple). Magnification: x570 when printed 10cm wide | |
