Liver tissue. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two leucocytes (white blood cells at centre) within a capillary of the liver. The capillary has a fenestrated endothelium characterised by a number of small holes through which nutrient substances may reach all liver cells. Capillaries form a complicated network inside the liver in which blood is cleaned of microorganisms, toxins, aged cells and debris. Most of this work is done by the leucocytes and also by the macrophages, the phagocytic cells which form the reticulo-endothelial system. Magnification: x1700 at 6x6cm size. x2440 at 4x5 inch | |
