Gall bladder. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the mucous layer within the gall bladder. The mucous layer is elevated into tiny rugae (folds) which give it a honeycombed appearance. The gall bladder is a storage sack for bile,an alkaline fluid, and has a capacity of 30- 50ml. Bile is produced by the liver and is released from the gall bladder to the duodenum where it is needed for fat digestion. Within the gall bladder bile is separated from water in a process which increases bile concentration. Normally about half a litre of bile is produced every day. Magnification: x80 at 6x7cm size | |
