False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the mucosa of the stomach showing a gastric pit at upper right. Gastric pits are the points at which gastric glands open into the stomach lumen. These glands synthesise and secrete gastric juices,a watery solution containing hydrochloric acid & the digestive enzyme pepsin. Deposited in the stomach lumen via the pits,the juice acts on food entering the stomach,breaking it down into polypeptide fragments. The stomach is protected from autodigestion by a layer of mucous-secreting cells. Magnification: x480 at 6x7cm size
