MODEL RELEASED. Lymphoid tissue on the throat of a 48 year old woman. Lymphoid tissue is part of the immune system and contains lymphocyte cells that fight infection in the body. It makes up the tonsils and lymph nodes but also is embedded in the lining over the posterior wall (pharyngeal wall) of the throat and the back of the tongue. Patches of this tissue can become temporarily swollen,as has occurred here (yellow patch at right). The swelling is often of little concern, and does not necessarily indicate an underlying infection | |
