Human ear, artwork. The outer ear (left) collects sound waves as air vibrations, which pass through the ear canal and middle ear before reaching the fluid of the inner ear. The fluid is contained within three loops (semicircular canals, centre),which provide the sense of balance by detecting movement of the fluid through the three planes. The cochlea is the hollow spiral on the right of the canals. This structure contains microscopic hairs that respond to the sound vibrations from the middle ear. Nerves connected to the cochlea carry the sound information as electric impulses to the brain | |
