The Organ of Corti. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a group of outer pillar cells (yellow) situated inside the Organ of Corti in the inner ear. The Organ of Corti is a complex system in which ciliated neurone cells convert the mechanical energy of sound waves into electrical impulses, which are sent to the brain for their analysis. The outer pillar cells number about 4000 and, together with the inner pillar cells, serve the function of supporting two membranes found in the Organ of Corti: the basilar (seen at bottom) and the tectorial membrane (not visible here).
