Cells of the lens of the eye. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a fractured lens of the human eye,showing the ordered arrangement of the closely packed lens cells,called fibres. The transparency of the lens is due to an absence of nuclei in its cells & to the crytalline precision of their arrangement. The zip-like rows of ball-&-socket joints that bind these cells together may play a part. In cross- section lens cells are flattened hexagons,arranged in regular stacks.
