False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of the human olfactory epithelium, the site of smell receptors in the nasal cavity. This image features a single olfactory vesicle (centre),with numerous cilia radiating from its free surface. The cilia are believed to be the points of interaction between a smelly substance and the receptor nerve cell. The olfactory vesicle is a bulbous surface expansion of the cytoplasm of the olfactory receptor cell (a bipolar nerve cell),one of the three cell types that comprise the olfactory epithelium.
