Positron computed tomography (PCT) scans of the brain, showing the results of 4 types of auditory stimulation. PCT scans depend on the brain's use of glucose to fuel its activity. A volunteer is injected with a minute dose of a radioactive tracer chemical that binds to glucose molecules in the blood. The glucose tends to concentrate in parts of the brain where there is increased activity (cerebral metabolism),& is detected by the emission of positron radioactivity from the tracer. The resulting signals are processed by computer to give maps which show which parts of the brain are most active | |
