Positron emission tomography (PET) scans show the activity of the brain in response to different stimuli. The subjects have been injected with a short-lived,radioactive positron emitter that attaches to glucose in the blood. The glucose concentrates in areas where there is increased metabolic activity in the brain, and this in turn shows up as an increased amount of radioactivity. Here are 4 scans representing different audio stimuli. With only verbal stimuli the left side of the brain appears more active; with non-verbal stimuli (music) there is more activity in the right-hand side | |
