Spleen pulp. Coloured light micrograph (LM) of a section through the red pulp of the spleen. This type of spleen tissue has a network architecture and is involved in filtering and breaking down old or defective red blood cells (erythrocytes, red). The red pulp is made up of connected cords of tissue (cords of Bilroth) which contain large numbers of immune system cells, such as macrophages,as well as erythrocytes. Blood passes through the red pulp through this meshwork of blood vessels and the blood is cleaned. Thiazine- red stain. Magnification: x25 at 35mm size | |
