Normal pelvis. Coloured X-ray of the pelvis of a 13-year-old girl. At top centre are the lumbar vertebrae of the spinal column, the lowest of which articulates with the sacrum. The sacrum forms the back of the pelvis and is connected to the large ear-shaped innominate bones. Each innominate bone is formed from three fused bones and accommodates the articulation of the hip joint: the ball of the head of each femur (lower left and right) can be seen fitted into the socket or acetabulum on each side of the pelvis. In the adult female the pelvis is wider and shallower. The darker regions within the pelvis are areas of gas in the intestine | |
