Spongy bone. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human spongy (cancellous) bone. This type of bone tissue is found deep inside bones, below a dense shell of hard "compact" bone. It consists of a network of hard trabeculae (bars) separated by interconnected spaces, giving a mesh-like structure. In some bones these spaces are filled with bone marrow,a living tissue which manufactures blood cells. Although it appears fragile, spongy bone has an important supportive and strengthening role.
