Compact bone: false-colour scanning electron micrograph of one Haversian system in compact bone. All organic components have been removed from this ground & polished section. Bundles of Haversian systems form the core of compact bone. In each, sheets of calcified bone appear as concentric rings around a central canal, which formerly housed blood vessels & nerves. The smaller elliptical pits (called lacunae) are the locations of the osteocytes, the bone- forming cells. Throughout growth & adult life, compact bone is constantly being reabsorbed and refashioned.
