Blood pressure experiment. Historical artwork of an experiment to discover the blood pressure of a horse. The horse has a glass tube stuck in an artery in its neck. This experiment was carried out by the English chemist and physiologist Stephen Hales (1677-1761),seen sitting at lower right. His assistant measured the blood as rising 9 feet up the 11 foot long tube. Blood pressure forces the blood along the arteries. He dealt with blood circulation and pressure in his 1733 book Haemastaticks | |
