Korean War surgery. Army doctors carrying out surgery on a wounded US soldier during the Korean War. The doctors are wearing surgical scrubs, and are operating under a set of light bulbs hanging from the ceiling. The Korean War started as an escalation in 1950 of the civil war between North and South Korea, but Cold War rivalries drew the US and China into the conflict, with the US fighting against the Soviet-backed Communist forces of North Korea and China. The main hostilities took place from June 1950 to July 1953. Millions of soldiers and civilians died. Over 36,000 US soldiers died and over 92,000 were wounded. Photographed on 4 August 1952,at the 8209th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, twenty miles from the frontline | |
