Caricature published in London in 1832 entitled "A case of true cholera" portraying the peculiar attitude of some doctors at that time. It appeared in England for the first time in October 1831. It is an acute illness caused by the Gram- negative bacterium Vibrio cholerae which colonises the small bowel. Cholera starts with diarrhoea accompanied by vomiting between one and five days after infection. Up to 500ml of fluid may be lost each hour and,if not replaced,death follows in a few hours due to dehydration | |
