Touch receptor. Historical artwork of a Pacinian corpuscle,a sensory receptor for touch found in the dermis of the skin. The corpuscle consists of a sensory nerve ending surrounded by a capsule of 'onion-skin' membrane layers. It is stimulated by changes in pressure which cause mechanical deformation of the membrane, and is particularly sensitive to vibrations.
