Eye. Coloured historical illustration of a cross- section through a closed human eye. Front is at left. Light entering the eyeball is refracted by the transparent cornea and the body of liquid (the aqueous humour, white) behind it. Then the light is focused by the disc of the lens (white),seen immediately behind these structures. Light hitting the light-sensitive retina (inside the eyeball) produces electrical impulses which are transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve (running right from the back of the eyeball). Eyelashes are seen at the meeting of the eyelids at lower left of the eyeball. From a German encyclopedia,Bilder Atlas,by Johann Georg Heck,1860 | |
