Heart and neck blood vessels. Historical anatomical artwork of the blood vessels of the human heart and neck. In this view the front of the rib cage and the lungs have been removed, revealing the heart (lower centre),and the neck has been dissected to show the major blood vessels. Deoxygenated blood (blue) drains from the head through the jugular veins (largest neck arteries),and arms through the subclavian veins (under clavicle bones),into the vena cava vein (at left side of heart). The heart pumps oxygenated blood (red) into the aortic arch (above heart) and upwards to the carotid arteries of the neck (behind jugular veins). Other, smaller, blood vessels are also shown.
