Head and neck blood vessels. Coloured historical artwork of the blood vessels and lymphatic ducts of the head and neck. One of the jugular veins (blue) is seen descending the neck and joining veins from the arms. These all drain deoxygenated blood into the superior vena cava (not seen) and so to the heart (hidden under the pink chest muscles). The neck's carotid arteries (red, one by the jugular vein) carry oxygenated blood to the arteries seen branching out over the head. The white ducts and lumps (nodes) are part of the lymphatic system that recirculates lymph (the fluid that bathes the body tissues). From Bilder Atlas,by Johann Georg Heck,1860 | |
