Mad cow disease. Abstract computer art of flames engulfing a cow with BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) or "mad cow" disease. Human brains are seen depicting the infection of humans. Fire is the method by which these cows are disposed of. BSE-infected cows suffer nerve damage,a disease that appeared in 1985 in Britain. It is believed to have arisen from scrapie,a similar disease in sheep and goats, and transmitted by feeding cattle with infected sheep. The agent responsible for BSE is a virus-like organism known as a prion. There is concern that beef and cattle-related products eaten by people may cause the related Creutzfeldt- Jakob disease (CJD) in humans | |
