through brain tissue of a cow infected with BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) or "mad cow" disease. Nuclei (black dots) of nerve cells are seen. At centre, white vacuole spaces show the disease. As BSE progresses increased vacuoles make the brain tissue spongy and nerve cells are destroyed. It causes "mad cow" symptoms of glazed eyes and body tremors. BSE is due to a virus-like prion. It is believed to have been transmitted from sheep infected with scrapie which were fed to cattle. There is concern that beef products eaten by people may cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease | |
