MODEL RELEASED. Baby with atresia sleeping in a hospital bed. This two-week old newborn baby has atresia,a birth defect consisting of a deformed or absent bodily opening or passage. There are several types of atresia, ranging from intestinal atresia (malformation of the intestines) to oesophageal atresia (where the oesophagus ends in a pouch rather than connecting to the stomach). Treatment for atresia depends on which type it is,but usually involves surgery to create an artificial opening called a stoma. Photographed at St. Mary's Hospital in Lacor,Gulu,Uganda | |
