Night-time blood sampling. View of blood being taken from a young girl's arm at night to test for mosquito parasites. Anopheles mosquitoes carry both the protozoan Plasmodium sp.,the cause of malaria, and the microfilariae (tiny worms) that cause elephantiasis. The microfilariae only move into the peripheral blood vessels, such as those in the arm,at night. Malaria causes fever and jaundice, and with certain varieties sometimes even coma and death. Elephantiasis is a type of filariasis in which the worms repeatedly block the lymphatic system causing massive swelling of certain parts of the body, most commonly the limbs.
