Tuberculosis ward. Western-oriented Tibetan doctor checking a chest X-ray as part of a diagnosis for tuberculosis (TB). The doctor and two TB victims (in background) wear masks to prevent the spread of infection. The lungs of TB sufferers contain infected areas (tubercules) which will show up as opaque patches on an X-ray. TB is caused by the bacillus Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is spread in airborne droplets breathed out by sufferers. TB is treated by the use of antibiotics. The disease is a major problem in poor regions as it thrives in conditions of malnutrition and overcrowding.
