Tuberculosis ward. Western-oriented Tibetan doctor (at centre right),assisted by foreign volunteer doctors, makes his rounds on a tuberculosis (TB) ward. The doctors and child patient (at left) wear masks to prevent the spread of TB infection. The doctor is holding X-rays of patients' lungs which are used to diagnose TB. TB is caused by the bacillus Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is spread in airborne droplets breathed out by sufferers which are then inhaled by fresh victims. TB is treated by the use of antibiotics. The disease is a major problem in poor regions as it thrives in conditions of malnutrition and overcrowding.
