Laser cancer detector. Fibre-optic probe analysing tissue with its laser. The probe can distinguish between cancerous,pre-cancerous and healthy cells in seconds,as well as identify disease-causing microbes,to give instant diagnoses. Attaching the probe to a scalpel would allow cancers to be rem- oved without harming healthy tissue. Most of the light scattered back to the probe from tissue is identical to the original laser light. Some, however, returns at different wavelengths, giving a unique Raman spectrum. Comparison with a spec- tral database allows each type of tissue or micro- organism to be identified. The probe was developed at Erasmus University,Rotterdam,Netherlands | |
