Endoscopic view of a laser surgery technique used to correct otosclerosis in the inner ear, showing a fine argon laser beam drilling a hole in the stapes (one of the tiny bones of the inner ear),which have become immobilised by an abnormal growth of bone that prevents the conduction of sound waves from the middle to the inner ear. A series of holes is drilled into the stapes & a tiny titanium pin implanted. An older surgical technique involves removing the stapes & replacing with a titanium pin which is able to vibrate; disadvantages include the trauma & resulting loss of fluid from the inner ear which also affect hearing & balance | |
