Bird flu research. Scientist studying dog kidney cells infected with avian influenza (bird flu) virus under a light microscope. The kidney cells are used to replicate the virus. Once sufficient numbers of the virus have been shed from the cells they will be analysed to determine their strain. The virus strain H5N1 can be spread to humans by inhaling the faeces of infected birds, and can be fatal. It is feared it could mutate into a form able to be transmitted from human to human, potentially leading to hundreds of thousands of deaths. Photographed at the Pasteur Institute,France | |
