Avian flu. Gloved hand holding a vial containing the H7 strain of avian flu, also known as bird flu. This influenza A type virus is highly contagious and responsible for the deaths of domestic birds in Asia,North America and eastern Europe. Humans are able to catch the disease with close contact from live infected birds. The first case was in Hong Kong in 1997. Infected humans suffer similar symptoms to normal flu, though severe cases can be fatal. It is feared that avian flu could exchange genes with the human flu virus and cause an outbreak of pandemic proportions. As of 2005 there is no vaccine for any strain of avian flu | |
