Acremonium fungus. Cultured Acremonium sp. fungus grown in a petri dish. The vegetative body of the fungus, the mycelium, has grown outwards from the centre. Acremonium was formerly known as Cephalosporium and is the source of the group of antibiotic drugs known as cephalosporins. Cephalosporins are widely used to treat bacterial infections of the ear, throat and respiratory tract. They may be useful in treating infections that are resistant to penicillin antibiotics, such as urinary tract infections and gonorrhoea, and in patients who are allergic to penicillin. Acremonium fungi can be isolated from plant debris and soil, where they grow naturally | |
