Bacteria research. Stacks of petri dishes containing agar for the culture of methicillin- resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria. These are bacteria that have developed resistance to methicillin and related antibiotics. The plates contain a medium that allows only MRSA bacteria to grow. Samples are taken from hospital patients and grown in microbiology laboratories to identify the bacteria present. S. aureus and MRSA bacteria are found on the skin of many people, but if they enter a patient's skin or lungs they can cause boils or pneumonia. If a hospital identifies MRSA bacteria among its patients it will implement infection control procedures to limit its spread | |
