SARS research. Researcher pipetting a sample during research to sequence the genome of a coronavirus. A technique known as 5' RACE was used in combination with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to identify the leader sequence of the virus' genome. The virus is the most likely cause of SARS. SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) is a fatal lung disease that first appeared in China in late 2002,and spread worldwide through air travel. It is spread by the inhalation of airborne water droplets that contain the virus. SARS is thought to be fatal in around 5% of cases.
