Influenza virus test. Tray of wells containing a diagnostic test for influenza (flu). Inside six of the wells is a "monomolecular" film,and in three wells a positive colour change has occurred. The film contains sialic acid molecules which bind the influenza virus,and diacetylene lipids forming a backbone to the film. A nasal or throat swab is placed on this thin film. If the swab is infected with flu,viruses bind to the film altering its molecular structure. A colour change then occurs from blue to purple to red. This diagnostic test was developed by Deborah Charych and colleagues at the Center for Advanced Materials at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL),California
