MODEL RELEASED. Plating of bacteria. Laboratory technician streaks bacteria onto an agar growth medium in a petri dish. These petri dishes are filled with different coloured agar nutrient mediums upon which bacteria are grown. The small bottles (centre right) contain bacteria. Using a platinum wire loop, the laboratory technician streaks a specific type of bacteria in parallel lines across the agar. These lines are crossed and recrossed at different angles, diluting the culture until colonies form around a single bacterium. Streaking is a technique for isolating strains of bacteria from mixed cultures, which are then incubated and grown in pure form | |
