EPO testing in sport. Blood sample being tested for the presence of the performance-enhancing hormone erythropoietin (EPO). The blood has been spun at very high speeds in a centrifuge, causing the blood to separate into three layers: red blood cells, white blood cells and plasma. If the red blood cells constitute more than 50% of the volume of the blood it is presumed that the athlete took EPO. By increasing the number of red blood cells, the athlete is also increasing his or her blood oxygen levels. As EPO is a naturally occurring hormone, testing for its metabolites is not a test for its abuse. Photographed in the laboratories of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI),Rome,Italy | |
