Enlarged prostate. Image 1 of 10. Endoscope image from inside the urethra,of an enlarged prostate gland pushing on the urethral walls causing them to bulge inwards. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. The prostate sits underneath the bladder, surrounding the urethra. This is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH),a non- cancerous enlargement. The narrowing of the urethra causes problems with passing urine. BPH is a common condition, affecting half of all men over 50. Most cases require no treatment, but more severe cases can be treated with muscle relaxants, surgical removal of the prostate,or laser surgery.
