Deformed spermatozoon. Light micrograph showing a deformed spermatozoon (bottom centre). It is characterised by the presence of two tails stemming from the spermatozoon head. Deformed sperm may lead to male infertility; defects in the sperm may be due to a blockage of the spermatic tubes or to damage to the spermatic ducts, usually caused by a sexually transmitted disease. A varicocele, varicose veins in the scrotum, may also be a factor for deformed sperm. Other causes for male infertility include a zero production of sperm (azoospermia) or a failure to deliver sperm into the vagina (impotence). Magnification: x400 at 35mm size | |
