Photograph of a human testicle containing a seminoma,a malignant testicular cancer. The scale on the left indicates that the testis is approximately 8 centimetres across. The tumour appears as a swelling, usually painless,in the scrotum. Seminomas, the more common of the two main types of tumour effecting the testes, have a peak incidence at about 30 years of age. They are comprised of a single kind of cell (probably developing from the the cells that produce sperm). Genetic and enviromental factors are thought to play a role in the incidence of testicular cancer. The best treatment for the localized disease is orchidectomy, the surgical removal of the testis | |
