Light micrograph of a cervical smear showing cells infected with Chlamydia trachomatis,a virus-like bacterium that causes a number of diseases of the male & female genital tract, and trachoma of the eye. In childbirth, the passage of the fetus through an infected cervix may cause conjunctivitis and pneumonia in the infant. Infected cells appear in centre of the image. Here, the presence of Chlamydia particles is indicated by the appearance of one or more clear "ground glass" cytoplasmic vacuoles. The appearance of such features is not conclusive proof of chlamydial infection. Diagnosis is confirmed by tissue culture in mouse McCoy cells | |
