Illustration of gonorrhoea of the cervix. This is one of the most common sexually transmitted dis- eases, known as "the clap". It is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. As seen here,a discharge from the cervix and vagina may occur in infected women although in a large percentage of women there are no symptoms. A burning sensation may occur when passing urine,as is the case in infected men. Gonorrhoea has a short incubation period of 2-10 days and untreated,it may spread to other parts of the body. Untreated gonorrhoea in women affects the fallopian tubes, causing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and even infer- tility. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs | |
