| IUD contraceptive. GyneFIX IntraUterine contracep- tive Device (IUD) on the metal rod used to implant it in the muscle at the top of a woman's uterus (the fundal myometrium). This IUD consists of 6 copper rings on a thread which is anchored in the myometrium by the knot at upper left. The thread hangs through the cervix,making it easy to remove. GyneFIX's design makes it unlikely to irritate surrounding tissue or be accidentally expelled. IUDs are thought to work by interfering with the implantation of a fertilised egg in the uterus.
