Cervical smear test. Equipment used to collect cells from the uterine cervix during a ThinPrep Pap (Papanicolaou) test. A scraper (blue/white) is used to scrape a sample of cells from the cervix. The cells are then transferred into a preservative solution in a specimen bottle. This mode of collection was approved in 1996 and is an improvement on the previous smear test because cells are held in suspension until analysis and can be spread more thinly on a slide. This should improve the detection rate of abnormalities, such as cervical cancer, and decrease the incidence of false diagnoses. Cervical cancer is almost 100% curable when detected early | |
