Uterine hyperplasia. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a ciliated cell in a hyperplastic endometrium (uterine lining). Hyperplasia is the enlargement of a tissue or organ caused by an increase in the number of its constituent cells. This cell has numerous cilia (yellow) and microvilli (green),and is in the process of losing its cilia. Uterine hyperplasia is usually caused by an excess of ovarian hormones. The cells are not cancerous, but in some cases hyperplasia may be a precursor to the development of a uterine tumour. Magnification: x2500 at 6x7cm size | |
